You are probably looking at this title and thinking, what?! You probably recognize the name Yeshua, but who or what is Yeshoo?
When the angel spoke to Joseph in his dream in Matthew 1:21, directing him to take Mary as his wife, he said, “She will give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.” Jesus in Hebrew is Yeshua. Every name has a meaning, often relating to a particular attribute of the person bearing that name. What is the meaning of the name Yeshua? The meaning in Hebrew is salvation, deliverance. What deep meaning! It describes exactly what Jesus came to do on earth, to bring us salvation, deliverance from the claws of death and restoration of our relationship with God. Yeshua is the name believers in Israel use when speaking of Jesus.
The name Yeshoo is a variation of Yeshua and is said to be a transliteration of the name into Aramaic, which was one of the languages spoken in Jesus’ time. Today, however, it has a completely different meaning. Unbelieving Israelis use the name Yeshoo when referring to Jesus, but what many don’t realize is that it’s an acronym created by rabbis long ago meaning, “May his name be erased from the face of the earth.” Though He is their promised Messiah who came to save them from their sins and restore their relationship with Him, this is the name they call Him. It is in fact a curse. And yet God, in His sovereign grace and patience, never gives up on them, always keeping His promise to them, that they will be the apple of His eye. They push Him away, and He so patiently and persistently tries to call them back home.
God chose the Jews to be His people, to be a light in the darkness and demonstrate to the world that He is God. Whether in their faithfulness or rebellion, God has used them in this way. His decision is final. Here we see, even in their unbelief, they are an example, actually proof, that God does not give up on anyone of us. When we forget Him or push Him away, He patiently and persistently calls us to return to Him. We just need to answer His voice, and give our lives to Him.
