God is a God of justice. In this week’s Torah portion, He specifies the principles of how to administer proper judgment. Society must protect that one who has become a victim of wrongdoing. In this way we see God’s holiness as One who issues worthy penalty to the one who commits a crime. He also displays His love by protecting the weak. Yeshua specified on the Sermon on the Mount that we must guard our hearts from the desire to rise up and take vengeance against those who have done us harm. Our hearts must remain pure and holy as God is holy. We can’t take the law in our own hands. For that reason, God placed authorities and leaders that they would issue the justice required. Above all, as children of God, we must trust in the God of righteousness and the Judge, to whom we will all give account and with Him there is no partiality.
